Tanzanian Shilling

Currency can be changed at currency exchange offices, banks, as well as at the post office. In the resort areas both Visa and Mastercard cards and TZB in cash are accepted for payment.

When exchanging money, please note that currency exchange offices may charge a commission for each transaction.

Travel Insurance

With effect from 1 October 2024, all visitors to Zanzibar (excluding residents) must have mandatory Inbound Travel Insurance from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) for the duration of their stay (up to 92 days). This includes day visitors and cruise ship passengers. Anyone arriving before October 1, 2024, but staying beyond this date, must purchase this insurance.

You can only buy this insurance from ZIC. Other international travel insurance policies will not be accepted. Go to the Visit Zanzibar website for more information or to apply. Insurance must be obtained through a QR code provided by ZIC before the tourist embarks on their journey to Zanzibar.

Insurance fees:

  • Children below 2 years: covered under their parent's insurance (Free of Charge).
  • Children below 18 years: US $22 per person.
  • 18 years and above: US $44 per person.
  • Group Discount: a 10% discount is available for groups traveling together on the same itinerary.

You may be refused entry if you do not have the correct insurance.
