Discover Madeira Like Never Before

One of Europe’s most breathtaking hiking routes is reopening — and it’s the perfect reason to visit Madeira in 2026.

After a two-year closure, the legendary PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail will officially reopen in April 2026, offering travellers a unique opportunity to explore one of the most spectacular landscapes in Europe.

Walk Above the Clouds in Madeira

The PR1 trail is one of the most iconic hikes in Portugal, connecting the island’s highest peaks:

Pico do Areeiro (1818m)
Pico das Torres (1851m)
Pico Ruivo (1862m)

In just around 3.5 hours, hikers can experience dramatic mountain ridges, tunnels carved through volcanic rock, and breathtaking views above the clouds.

The route runs through Madeira’s Central Mountain Massif — a protected natural area known for its unique ecosystem and untouched beauty.

Fully Restored After Wildfires

The trail has been closed since 2024 following a major wildfire. After extensive restoration work, it is now safer and better equipped for visitors, making 2026 the perfect time to return.

A Perfect Time to Visit Madeira

The reopening coincides with the Madeira Island Ultra Trail Running Challenge (25–26 April 2026) — one of the island’s most exciting sporting events, attracting visitors from across Europe.

Entry Fee Update
New price: €10.50
Previously: ~€4.50

The increased fee helps support maintenance, safety, and environmental protection.
