Twinkling lights, traditional markets, festive food and some of Europe's most beautiful cities – Christmas market season is almost here.
If you're looking for an excuse to squeeze in one more city break before the end of the year, a European Christmas market break could be just the thing.
From the historic squares of Kraków and Prague to the grand Christmas markets of Vienna, festive Budapest and the illuminated streets of Paris, we've picked five cities worth adding to your winter travel list.
And with short breaks from the UK, you don't need a full week away to make the most of them.
🎄 Kraków: Christmas Traditions in the Heart of the Old Town
Few settings feel quite as Christmassy as Kraków's Rynek Główny.
The city's huge medieval Market Square becomes the centre of the celebrations, with wooden stalls selling Christmas decorations, handicrafts and Polish specialities. Expect everything from pierogi and grilled oscypek cheese to gingerbread and warming festive drinks.
Kraków's Christmas market is centred around Rynek Główny and traditionally combines food, gifts, handicrafts and seasonal events.
But don't spend the entire break at the market. Walk through the Old Town, see Wawel Castle and cross over to atmospheric Kazimierz for cafés, restaurants and an entirely different side of the city.

✨ Prague: A Fairytale Christmas Setting
If there's one European city that looks as though it was designed for Christmas, Prague has a strong case.
Its cobbled streets, Gothic towers and historic architecture provide the backdrop, while some of the biggest festive celebrations take place around Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square.
For 2026, both major markets are scheduled to run from 28 November 2026 until 6 January 2027, giving travellers plenty of opportunity to visit throughout December.
Browse stalls for Czech crafts and gifts, stop for something warm to eat and leave time simply to explore the city after dark when Prague's historic centre is illuminated.

❄️ Vienna: The Classic Christmas Market Break
Vienna doesn't limit Christmas to one square.
The Austrian capital fills with markets throughout the festive period, meaning you can easily spend a long weekend moving between completely different settings.
The famous Viennese Christmas Market at Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, while the spectacular market at Schönbrunn Palace is scheduled from 6 November 2026 until 6 January 2027.
There's also a Christmas Village beside St Stephen's Cathedral, markets at Karlsplatz and Spittelberg, and plenty more scattered around the city.
Between markets, make time for Vienna's coffee houses, imperial architecture and museums – or simply find somewhere warm for coffee and cake.

🗼 Paris: Christmas with a French Twist
Paris might not be the first destination you think of when planning a traditional European Christmas market break – and that's exactly why it deserves a place on the list.
Come December, Christmas markets appear across the French capital alongside illuminated streets and elaborate festive window displays.
The Paris tourist office highlights Christmas markets including Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Notre-Dame, La Défense and the Alsatian market at Gare de l'Est as part of the city's 2026 festive season.
Then there's everything else you get with Paris: the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, cafés, museums, Christmas shopping and evening walks along the Seine.
Even the city's department stores join in. Galeries Lafayette, Printemps Haussmann, Le Bon Marché, BHV Marais and La Samaritaine are among those known for their festive displays.
