Atmospheric old streets, autumn evenings, Halloween events and some of Europe's most exciting cities – Halloween is the perfect excuse for an autumn city break.

And in 2026, there's an even better reason to get away: Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October. Travel on Friday, spend Halloween somewhere completely different and return on Monday after a three-night European escape. From Halloween adventures in Budapest and after-dark experiences in Porto to an entire Halloween festival in Geneva and underground tours beneath Vienna, we've picked four European cities worth considering this October. And with short breaks from the UK, you don't need a full week away to make the most of them.

🎃 Budapest: Halloween on the Danube

Budapest already feels made for an autumn city break. Grand architecture, atmospheric streets and the Danube provide the backdrop, while the city's thermal baths, restaurants and famous nightlife give you plenty to fill a long weekend. Start with the Hungarian Parliament Building on the banks of the Danube, cross Chain Bridge towards Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion, or spend a few hours relaxing in one of the city's famous thermal baths. Then, as Halloween approaches, Budapest takes on a rather different atmosphere.

On Friday 30 October, Budapest Zoo is holding its special Halloween Evening from 6pm until 11pm. After the normal daytime opening ends, the zoo reopens for a dedicated Halloween programme focusing on the darker side of nature, with snakes, arthropods and other suitably spooky encounters forming part of the evening. That makes it an easy way to start your Halloween weekend before spending Saturday 31 October exploring Budapest itself. And once darkness falls, don't miss an evening walk along the Danube. The illuminated Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle and bridges create one of the city's best night-time views.

👻 Porto: Halloween After Dark

Porto might not be the first European city you associate with Halloween – but that's part of the appeal.
Spend the day exploring the colourful buildings of Ribeira, walk beside the Douro, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge and discover the cafés, restaurants and historic streets that make Porto such a good choice for a short break. Other highlights include São Bento Station, Porto Cathedral, Clérigos Tower and the city's famous Port wine cellars across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia. Then Halloween gives you an opportunity to experience Porto after dark.

What's happening in Porto for Halloween 2026?

On 31 October, Experience Trindade by Night: Halloween Special opens the historic Trindade complex for a special evening experience. The two-hour programme combines a guided night-time visit through the church and Ordem da Trindade complex with access to terraces overlooking the illuminated city. There's also live music from soprano Daniela Rego and organist Samuel Pinto, with sessions scheduled for 6:30pm and 10pm. And that's far from the only Halloween event taking place in Porto. The city's official event calendar also lists the Scary Groove Quest Halloween party at Hard Club, a Halloween edition of Cabaret: New Xperience, family Halloween activities and several other events on 31 October.

So whether you want an atmospheric historical experience or somewhere to continue celebrating later into the night, Porto gives you options.

🕯️ Geneva: A Whole Festival Dedicated to Halloween

Geneva offers something rather different for Halloween 2026. The Swiss city is best known for its lake, Jet d'Eau and beautiful surroundings, but visit at the end of October and you'll find an entire festival dedicated to Halloween. Before the Halloween celebrations begin, explore Geneva's Old Town, see St Pierre Cathedral, walk beside Lake Geneva and visit the famous Jet d'Eau. Then it's time for Hallomania.

What's happening in Geneva for Halloween 2026?

Running from 24 October to 1 November 2026, Hallomania returns for its fourth edition with 18 Halloween events taking place across the canton of Geneva and around Le Salève. And there's plenty happening during our Halloween weekend itself. On 30 and 31 October, Hallie's Big Lantern Hunt takes families through Geneva's Old Town after dark, with ghost lanterns, fluorescent accessories and Halloween treats along the route. A Murder Party & tasting at Brasserie des Murailles also takes place on 30 and 31 October, while the wider programme includes chocolate ghost-making workshops, candy hunts and other Halloween experiences. On 31 October, Geneva's Old Town also becomes the setting for a Halloween game and candy hunt through its cobbled streets, historic locations and hidden corners. It's arguably the most extensive Halloween programme of the four cities on our list.

🦇 Vienna: Discover the City's Spooky Side

Vienna's grand palaces, historic streets and elegant coffee houses might not immediately scream Halloween – until you discover what lies beneath the city. Spend the daytime seeing the Austrian capital's classics: Schönbrunn Palace, Hofburg Palace, St Stephen's Cathedral and the historic centre. Stop for coffee and cake in one of Vienna's traditional coffee houses, then wait until darkness falls. Because on Halloween night, there's another side of Vienna to discover.

What's happening in Vienna for Halloween 2026?

One of the most unusual events takes visitors up to 15 metres beneath Vienna. The Halloween Special Tour through Vienna's Underground takes place on 31 October, exploring historic underground cellars by the light of old bunker lanterns. Three different tours are scheduled.

At 5pm, the programme explores Vienna's executioners, capital punishment and some of the darker chapters of the city's history.

At 7pm, the focus shifts to alchemists, mysterious traditions and legends of old Vienna.

Then at 10:30pm, there's a dedicated spooky tour through the city's underground passages and vaults.

And the Halloween programme doesn't end underground.

Halloween Horror Night 2026 takes place at Vienna's Urania from 5:30pm on 31 October, with a haunted house, Halloween dinner, horror movie and Halloween party included in the programme.Vienna's autumn events calendar also lists the Vienna Halloween Run on 30 October, plus several other Halloween events taking place across the city on 31 October.
